TOUR OF BRITAIN, PEAK DISTRICT - 16/09/12

The Tour of Britain visited the Peak District twice this year, on stages 2 and 5. These photos are from Stage 5 of the tour, which took place on the 13th September, and include photos from the start at Trentham Gardens in Stoke-on-Trent, as well as Warslow Village in the Peak District. The Italian gardens at the Trentham Estate were a busy place at the start of the challenging 146.9km stage 5. Current World Road Race Champion Mark Cavendish made his way to the start line wearing the Gold Jersey as overall leader of the Tour, after his two previous stage wins.

Riders wait on the start line for the 10:30am start, including King of the Mountains jersey holder Kristian House. Out on the road many people lined the route to support the riders in Warslow Village, which was also part of the route on stage 2 of the race.
     
Bradley Wiggins Marc De Maar Ivan Basso
Two times Giro d'Italia winner Ivan Basso, (right photo) was leading the race as it passed through Warslow. Tour de France Winner and four times Olympic Gold Medalist Bradley Wiggins was riding his last stage before being forced to drop out with a stomach bug.
