LAKE DISTRICT, WINDERMERE - 22/05/04

Photos on this page from our visit yesterday to the Lake District. All photos on this page are from around Lake Windermere. You can find the lake in Cumbria to the west of Kendal, for a map of the area click here. The weather is dry and sunny with temperatures reaching approximately 16˚C.

Windermere is the largest natural lake in England at 12 miles long and a mile wide. Photo on the left above features Waterhead, Ambleside at the northern end of the lake.

The Lake is a very popular place for water activities, we enjoy a cruise from Ambleside towards Bowness-on-Windermere, the Lake District's most popular tourist destination. Pleasure cruises are nothing new here with Steamers operating on the lake since 1845.

Photos centre and right show views from the boat of Bowness Bay on the eastern shore of the Lake. It is thought the lake was made by glaciers 10,000 years ago in the last ice age. More photos from the our visit in page two to visit click here.
