ANDERTON BOAT LIFT & MARBURY COUNTRY PARK - 26/05/03

Today we visit the recently re-opened Anderton Boat Lift and the nearby Marbury Country Park, located near Northwich, Cheshire, it's a dry day with sunny spells. The Anderton Boat Lift was the worlds first boat lift, constructed in 1875 to carry canal barges from the River Weaver up to the Trent & Mersey Canal 50ft above.

Marbury Country Park is located nearby, within walking distance, along the Explorer Trail, a 5mile way-marked path. Many of the features here, such as the arboretum and the avenues lined with Lime Trees are due to the fact that the area started life as a grand Country Estate.

You can pay to go on a boat tour, run at regular intervals from the boat lifts new Operations Centre, the barge in the middle photograph above is one of the tour barges.

Its a busy spot today, (Bank Holiday Monday!) with many of the boats on the move. There is an abundance of wildlife in the area, we spot Heron's, Canada Geese and Coots.

The Rhododendrons are in full flower at Marbury Country Park, the water you can see in the photos is Budworth Mere, at the Country Park.
